The LIFE GoProForMED project develops and tests alternative and innovative forest management models in Mediterranean habitats, in line with the principles of Closer-to-Nature Forestry, to support the transition towards forest stands that are more resilient, structurally complex and capable of providing a wide range of ecological, economic and social functions.
Among the actions designed to support this transition, the project includes an important training programme aimed at forest technicians, managers and professionals.
Training objectives
The training programme is designed to strengthen the technical and management skills of those working in Mediterranean forest habitats. It includes field-based testing of solutions for the improvement and maintenance of habitats, as well as their management according to multiple objectives.
During the programme, participants will explore methods for assessing target habitats, from identifying forest types to applying the Potential Biodiversity Index, and will learn how to plan ecological networks for habitat and biodiversity conservation, taking into account wildfire risk.
They will also acquire a methodology for applying forest management models inspired by the principles of Closer-to-Nature Forestry, including through the use of digital decision-support tools.
The project’s integrated approach to habitat conservation and management can be learned directly in the forest through the use of marteloscopes, specifically established to make the practical training experience more effective.
Training format
The training activities will combine online theoretical sessions with practical exercises in the forest. These will take place not only in the project’s pilot sites, where silvicultural models have been applied for experimental and demonstration purposes, but also in other Mediterranean areas equipped to offer a wider audience the opportunity to put into practice, in the field, the knowledge acquired in the “virtual classroom”.
All training materials will be developed by international experts, thanks to the project’s broad partnership involving universities, research and technology centres from four Mediterranean countries, ensuring a high scientific and operational standard.
